Dense medium separation is a robust process that can be conducted at particle sizes as coarse as 300 mm and as fine as 500 µm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the value minerals. The DMS process involves three steps: feed preparation, dense medium separation, and ferrous based media recovery.
In a Dense Media Separation / Heavy Media Separation plant, powdered ferrosilicon is suspended in water to form a fluid near the density of diamond , to which the diamond bearing material is added to begin the separation process of the heavier minerals from the lighter material.

Jigging Jigging is a gravity concentration technique where the iron ore is separated into light density fraction, medium density fraction and heavy density fraction. Size fraction of the iron ore used for jigging is 0.5 mm to 30mm. Spirals Spiral concentrators are flowing film separation devices.
The main advantage of the multi stage separator is the ability to produce multiple sink products within a single unitand the ability to fix the density cut points in each individual stage. Ores that contain multiple minerals with small density differences be readily can thereforeseparated in a single multi stage unit.
The Floatex Density Separator is a teeter bed separator, using an UCC technique that has the potential to upgrade lower grade iron ore fines and is a useful technique for rejection of clayey and/or silicate minerals.
